Optic fibre cable is capable of transmitting at a high frequency over longer distances, and in an office environment is often used as a back-bone to link cabinets and external buildings where bottle-necks of data transmissions could otherwise occur.
Typical transmission speeds/distance limits are 100 Mbs up to 2 km, 1 Gb for distances up to 500–600 meters and 10 Gbs for distances up to 300 meters.
The fibre can be connected at either end to Network switches with fibre connectors built in, or to standard Network switches using fibre-converters.
